How to Find a Good Chiropractor in Townsville: 8 Signs You've Found the Right One

I've been a chiropractor for more than 17 years -- first in the UK, and for well over a decade now here in Townsville. In that time I've spoken with a lot of people who came to me after a disappointing experience elsewhere. Not because the previous chiropractor was necessarily bad, but because the fit wasn't right, the process wasn't explained clearly, or they simply never felt like they understood what was happening or why.

Choosing a chiropractor is a meaningful decision. You're trusting someone with your spine, your nervous system, and your quality of life. So I want to give you an honest, practical guide to what good chiropractic care actually looks like from the inside -- so you can walk into any clinic in Townsville and know exactly what to look for.

How to Find a Good Chiropractor in Townsville: 8 Signs You've Found the Right One

1. They Listen Before They Touch You

A good chiropractor does not adjust you on your first visit. Full stop.

Before any hands go on your spine, your chiropractor should sit with you and take a thorough health history. That means asking about your current symptoms, how they started, what makes them better or worse, your past health history, your lifestyle, your work, and your goals for care. It means actually listening to your answers rather than rushing to the examination table.

At Bamboo Chiropractic, the first appointment is always consultation and assessment first. I want to understand who you are and what is going on before I recommend anything. If a chiropractor is adjusting you within the first five minutes of meeting you, that is a reason to pause.

What to look for:

A chiropractor who asks more questions than you expected and takes notes. One who lets you finish your sentences. One who connects your history to your examination findings before proposing a care plan.

2. They Examine You Thoroughly -- Including Neurologically

A physical examination for spinal complaints should include more than pressing on your back and asking if it hurts. A thorough chiropractic assessment includes orthopaedic tests to identify the likely source of your problem, a neurological screen to assess how your nerves are functioning, a postural and movement assessment, and range of motion testing.

This matters because two patients with identical-sounding symptoms can have completely different underlying causes. Back pain from a herniated disc needs to be managed differently from back pain driven by SI joint dysfunction or piriformis syndrome. A proper examination is what separates a targeted care plan from a guess.

At Bamboo Chiropractic we also offer X-ray assessment when it is clinically indicated -- not as a default for every patient, but when the findings suggest we need a clearer picture of what is happening structurally. If X-rays are recommended, I will always explain why.

What to look for:

An examination that takes time, involves specific tests, and results in a clear explanation of what was found and why it matters.

3. They Explain Your Diagnosis in Plain Language

You should leave your first appointment understanding what is wrong, why it happened, and what the plan is to address it. Not in clinical jargon -- in plain language that makes sense to you.

I believe an informed patient gets better results. When you understand what is causing your pain and what the treatment is designed to do, you are more likely to follow through with your care plan, do your exercises, and make the lifestyle adjustments that support your recovery. Keeping you in the dark does not serve you.

If a chiropractor cannot explain your diagnosis clearly, or brushes off your questions, that tells you something important about how your care will be delivered.

What to look for:

A chiropractor who takes time after the examination to explain findings, draws a diagram if needed, and encourages your questions. One who does not rush this part of the appointment.

4. They Build a Personalised Care Plan -- Not a Package

One of the most common concerns I hear from new patients is that a previous chiropractor put them on a pre-set package of 20 or 30 visits before they had even seen an X-ray. A care plan should be built around your specific presentation, your goals, your lifestyle, and your clinical findings -- not around a standard template.

At Bamboo Chiropractic, your care plan is developed after your assessment, not before. I will give you a realistic picture of how many visits are likely needed, what each phase of care is designed to achieve, and what progress should look like along the way. If things are not progressing as expected, the plan gets adjusted.

What to look for:

A care plan that is explained clearly, has defined goals, and is proportionate to your actual condition. Be cautious of very long pre-paid packages recommended before a thorough examination.

5. They Use Multiple Techniques and Adapt to You

Not every patient needs the same type of adjustment. A pregnant woman in her third trimester, a 70-year-old with osteoporosis, a 10-year-old child, and a 35-year-old tradie all have different spines, different needs, and different comfort levels. A skilled chiropractor should be able to adapt their approach accordingly.

I am trained in a range of techniques including Diversified, Thompson Drop, Activator, Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), and Webster Technique. I have also completed postgraduate training in paediatric and pregnancy chiropractic specifically because these populations require a different level of care and precision. Having a broad technique toolkit is not about showing off credentials -- it is about being able to meet each patient where they are.

If a chiropractor uses exactly the same adjustment on every patient regardless of age, size, or condition, that is worth questioning.

What to look for:

A chiropractor who asks about your preferences and comfort level, explains what technique they are using and why, and adjusts their approach if something does not feel right for you.

6. They Are Trained Beyond Their Basic Degree

The minimum qualification to practice chiropractic in Australia is a five-year university degree, and registration with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). That is the baseline -- not the ceiling.

The chiropractors who continue to invest in their skills after graduation are the ones who can offer a higher standard of care. For me personally, that has meant postgraduate training in SOT, Syntropy, pregnancy chiropractic, and paediatric chiropractic through courses including the Inspiral Pregnancy and Paediatric program and Steve Williams Pregnancy and Paediatric training. That ongoing learning directly benefits the patients I see every day.

You can verify any chiropractor's registration status and qualifications through the AHPRA public register at ahpra.gov.au. My registration number is CHI0001615628 if you want to look me up directly.

What to look for:

A chiropractor who can speak to their postgraduate training and continuing education. One whose qualifications are publicly verifiable through AHPRA.

7. They Are Honest About What Chiropractic Can and Cannot Do

A good chiropractor does not promise to cure everything. Chiropractic is an exceptional tool for musculoskeletal conditions -- back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches, rib pain, nerve entrapment, and more. It can also play a valuable role in general wellness care, posture rehabilitation, and supporting pregnant women and children.

But there are situations where chiropractic is not the right primary treatment, and where a referral to a GP, specialist, or other health professional is the appropriate next step. I have made those referrals. A chiropractor who tells every patient that chiropractic will fix every problem is not being honest with you -- and that matters.

You can see a full list of conditions we treat at Bamboo Chiropractic on our website. If your condition is not something we can help with, we will tell you that clearly and point you in the right direction.

What to look for:

A chiropractor who is clear about what they can help with, realistic about expected outcomes, and willing to refer out when that is in your best interest.

8. You Feel Comfortable, Informed, and Respected

This one cannot be measured on a checklist, but it matters as much as anything else. You should feel comfortable asking questions. You should never feel rushed, dismissed, or pressured. The clinic should feel professional, clean, and welcoming -- and the care should feel like it is genuinely designed around you rather than delivered on autopilot.

Many of our patients at Bamboo Chiropractic have been coming to us for years -- not because we push them to, but because they have found that regular chiropractic care makes a real difference to how they feel and function. That kind of long-term relationship is built on trust, and trust is built one honest appointment at a time.

If you leave a chiropractic appointment feeling more confused than when you arrived, or like you were not really heard, that is useful information. You have options.

What to look for:

A practice where the chiropractor remembers who you are, explains what they are doing, checks in on how you are progressing, and treats you as a person -- not a case number.
