There is no shortage of chiropractors in Townsville. So when a new patient books their first appointment at Bamboo Chiropractic, we never take that for granted. They chose us for a reason -- and more often than not, they tell us what that reason was at their first visit.

Some found us through a Google search. Some were referred by a friend or family member. Some had been to other chiropractors before and were looking for something different. Whatever brought them through the door, the reasons they stay tend to follow a consistent pattern.

Here is an honest look at why patients across Townsville, Mundingburra, and Charters Towers choose Bamboo Chiropractic -- and keep coming back.

Why People Choose Bamboo Chiropractic in Townsville

1. We Find the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

The most common thing new patients tell us is that they have been managing their pain for months or years without anyone properly explaining why it keeps coming back. They have tried pain relief, physio, rest, and stretching -- sometimes with short-term results, but without lasting change.

At Bamboo Chiropractic, every new patient goes through a thorough consultation and physical examination before we recommend anything. We want to understand not just where the pain is, but what is actually causing it -- whether that is a restricted spinal joint, a herniated disc, a muscular imbalance, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or something else entirely. The cause determines the care plan. Not the other way around.

This approach takes longer at the first appointment. But patients consistently tell us it is the first time they have felt genuinely heard and assessed -- and that it gives them confidence in the care that follows.

2. Our Chiropractors Are Genuinely Experienced and Well Trained

Dr. Paul Shanahan holds a Master of Chiropractic from the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic and has more than 17 years of clinical experience across the UK and Australia. He founded Bamboo Chiropractic in Townsville in 2016 and has been helping patients in the local community ever since.

Beyond his initial degree, Paul has invested significantly in postgraduate training. He is Webster Technique certified, has completed advanced paediatric and pregnancy chiropractic courses through the Inspiral Pregnancy and Paediatric Program and the Steve Williams Pregnancy and Paediatric Course, and holds certifications in SOT (Sacro-Occipital Technique) and Syntropy. These are not credentials for the sake of having them -- they directly inform the quality and range of care he is able to provide.

Dr. Taylah Wilnierak graduated from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic in 2019 and returned to Townsville after her first associate year because she genuinely loves the community here. She brings her own combination of techniques and a patient-focused approach that complements Paul's care.

Together, they see patients of all ages -- from newborns to seniors -- and across a wide range of conditions and presentations.

3. We Adapt Our Approach to Each Patient

Not every patient needs the same type of adjustment, and a good chiropractor should never apply the same technique to every person regardless of age, condition, or preference. Between Dr. Paul and Dr. Taylah, Bamboo Chiropractic offers a broad range of chiropractic techniques including Diversified, Thompson Drop, Activator Method, SOT, Webster Technique, and Syntropy.

For patients who are nervous about manual adjustments or who prefer a very gentle, low-force approach -- including elderly patients, pregnant women, and children -- the Activator Method is an excellent option. It delivers precise, gentle adjustments without any twisting or popping, and is highly effective for a wide range of spinal complaints.

For patients who prefer a more traditional hands-on approach, Diversified and Thompson Drop techniques are well-established and effective for the majority of musculoskeletal presentations.

The technique used at your appointment is always discussed with you beforehand. Nothing happens without your understanding and consent.

4. We Specialise in Pregnancy and Paediatric Care

One of the most common reasons patients specifically seek out Bamboo Chiropractic is our expertise in pregnancy chiropractic care. Dr. Paul Shanahan is Webster Technique certified and has completed two dedicated postgraduate pregnancy and paediatric chiropractic programs. Pregnancy care is not something we offer as an afterthought -- it is one of our core clinical strengths.

We see pregnant patients at all three stages of pregnancy, providing gentle, specifically adapted care for lower back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, round ligament discomfort, and more. Positioning and technique are always adapted to ensure your comfort and safety throughout.

We also provide gentle chiropractic assessments for newborns, infants, and children. A birth assessment can be particularly valuable for babies born via forceps, vacuum, or caesarean section, and paediatric chiropractic is adapted to suit the age and size of each child.

Many of our families come to us because they want one chiropractor who can look after everyone -- and that is exactly what we offer.

5. We Accept Medicare Chronic Condition Management Referrals

Cost is a real consideration for many patients when it comes to ongoing healthcare. A Bamboo Chiropractic, we accept Medicare Chronic Condition Management (CDM) referrals at both our Mundingburra and Charters Towers clinics.

If your GP has referred you under a CDM plan, Medicare covers almost all of the adjustment cost -- leaving you with just a $20 gap per visit. We handle all the claiming and administrative tracking on your behalf, so there is nothing complicated for you to manage.

If you have a chronic condition and have not yet spoken to your GP about a CDM referral, it is worth asking. Eligible conditions include chronic back pain, long-term sciatica, persistent headaches, and any condition your GP considers chronic -- meaning present or likely to be present for six months or more.

6. We Serve Two Convenient Locations

Bamboo Chiropractic operates from two clinic locations, making quality chiropractic care accessible to patients across a wide area of North Queensland.

Our Mundingburra clinic at 42 Ross River Rd is open Monday through Friday and serves patients from across Townsville including Kirwan, Aitkenvale, Annandale, Cranbrook, Rosslea, and surrounding suburbs.

Our Charters Towers clinic at 60 Hackett Terrace is open every Thursday and provides Dr. Paul's full range of chiropractic services to patients in the Charters Towers region.

No referral is needed to book at either location. Same-day appointments are often available.

7. We Are Honest About What Chiropractic Can and Cannot Do

This one matters more than it might sound. There are chiropractors who will tell patients that chiropractic can fix almost anything. We are not those chiropractors.

Chiropractic care is highly effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions -- back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches and migraines, rib pain, nerve entrapment, and more. You can see the full list of conditions we treat on our website.

But there are also presentations that require a different kind of care -- a GP referral, specialist investigation, or urgent medical assessment. When that is the case, we will tell you clearly and help you get to the right person. We would rather refer you appropriately than keep you in care that is not the right fit for your situation.

That honesty is something patients consistently tell us they appreciate -- and it is the foundation of the trust we try to build with every person who comes through our doors.

8. We Work With You, Not On You

Chiropractic care works best when patients understand what is happening and why. At Bamboo Chiropractic, we explain your findings, your diagnosis, and your care plan in plain language -- not clinical jargon. We encourage questions. We check in on how you are progressing. And we adjust the plan when needed rather than sticking rigidly to a protocol that is not working.

There are different ways to use chiropractic care -- short-term relief, long-term management of a chronic condition, or ongoing wellness care. Which one is right for you depends on your goals, your condition, and your lifestyle. We will help you figure that out at your first visit, and we will never pressure you into more care than you need or want.

Ready to Find Out If Bamboo Chiropractic Is the Right Fit for You?

The best way to know if we are the right chiropractor for you is to come in and find out. Your first appointment is a conversation and an assessment -- we will ask the right questions, examine your spine and posture thoroughly, explain what we find, and discuss the options. There is no obligation beyond that.

New patients are always welcome at both our Mundingburra and Charters Towers clinics. Book online or call us on 04321 47 234 -- we would love to help.
